Brundisium overview
Plan carefully for this: it's going to be a bit cramped on this map once you have to add all the military buildings, not to mention that wall you're instructed to build right away.
Before starting on the wall or gatehouses, set up a small city. You won't need villas in Brundisium: you have enough starting money to make it through the scenario, and you can export 50 pottery per year, which should generate enough money to keep you afloat.
Start in the middle of the map with your houses. I placed five insulae and two domus to start off with, along with the basic necessities to support them: two grain farms, water supply and fountain, and a pottery industry consisting of two clay diggers and three factories. Make sure there's enough space to build the wall later on. Besides the three-tile thick wall itself, the wall requires an open space of three tiles on both sides of the wall.
After the first harvest came in, I opened up the trade route to Latium. Placing the port requires rotating the port to make it fit on the shore. You can do that in two ways:
1. Press the R key repeatedly until the port faces in the right direction
2. Hold the port completely over land so you can't place it, click and drag in the direction you'd like the port to face, and then let go of the mouse. The port stays in that orientation and you can scan along the shore to find a suitable place.
When my pottery production was turning out some nice pots, I gave them to the two domus to keep them happy. Don't give them to the plebs yet: they will suck on your pottery industry and you won't be able to export much. I also started up a small weapons industry: an iron mine, a timber camp and a weapons factory. Because those last buildings need quite a few workers, I added more insulae prevent major worker shortages.
I didn't bother with adding the theatre or the bathhouse: your city will be fine without it. I only added a clinic to keep the city-wide health up to a reasonable level.
Remember that wall you were required to build? Now is the time to do that. I just placed a small section between my grain farms and my city: that allowed me to place a gate and a tower so I could continue with the assignment. I planned on completing the wall later on.
By the way, you can run the wall into the water: invaders won't be able to cross rivers or lakes, so those are a natural defence.
Once you've built a bit of wall, with a gatehouse and tower, you are instructed to produce 10 weapons. I already had 4 weapons stored in the weapons factory I placed earlier. I didn't want to build a warehouse, so I just added another weapons factory. Each factory can store up to 6 finished goods, so two factories are enough to fulfil the requirement of having 10 weapons stored.
When you have 10 weapons, build a mess hall, a recruiter's post and a light infantry fort. I also added a third farm to feed my soldiers.
When your fort has at least 10 soldiers, you will be invaded immediately from the top corner (when in the "default" camera orientation). If you haven't completed your wall yet, do so before your fort reaches 10 soldiers: while the barbarians are on the map, you won't be able to place any military buildings.
My wall wasn't complete when the invaders came, but luckily they just stood there without moving into my city. Your soldiers will have moved out of their fort by themselves, waiting for your directions. Click on one of the soldiers and then right-click on the enemy soldiers to attack them.
My soldiers quickly dispatched the barbarians, and the only thing I needed to do now to win the scenario was to get 1000 people in my city. I gave my 8 insulae pottery so they evolved to medium insulae, and built another one to get to 1000 people. I also completed the wall, just for the fun of it.
Well done, you've made it through the tutorials. Now, you can continue with the Republic campaign, either Syracusae (economic) or Mediolanum (military). |
