The original city of Augustodunum, founded by emperor Augustus around 15 BC, is believed to have contained as many as 300,000 inhabitants, at its heyday, during Roman times, making it one of the largest cities in Gaul, second only to Lugdunum ( Lyon ) in size and importance. Today, under its modern name of Autun, it has slipped back into becoming a regional center of barely 15,000 souls.

The local Gaulish tribe was called the Aedui ( les Eduens, in French ; Haedui, in Latin ). During the time of Julius Caesar's conquest of Gaul, they had already been the staunchest of Rome's allies since the first century B.C., to the point that the Roman Senate had proclaimed them to be : " Brothers of the Republic ", the highest possible status allowed a Celtic tribe.

The Aedui only reluctantly joined the campaign against Rome led by the great Celtic chief Vercingetorix, culminating in the final defeat of all the Gauls at Alesia in 52 BC. At this point, the Aedui lost their previous prestige in Rome and also their influence amongst neighbouring Gaulish tribes ; their local capital of Bibracte was gradually abandoned and they moved to the new city of Augustodunum.

Being situated at the confluence of three major river basins : the Loire, the Saone and the Seine, the site was an important crossroads for trade, which heavily relied on the presence of rivers, in these Roman times.

The city also presented a high cultural value at the time and the remnants of a leisure building : the amphitheater ; walls and gatehouses ; a temple and a presumed tomb, etc. are still present today.

I hope that this presentation, along with my scenario, will help to reestablish the rightful place of Augustodunum amongst the most glorious Roman cities of its day, for this fact seems to have been overlooked by the designers of Caesar IV.

Enjoy !

Thanks Auguste le grand. I enjoyed the scenario, and the historical information too.
City Planner I attempted to play on this map but nobody ever came to my settlement area. I thought maybe I'm building on the wrong sides of the rivers since it seems to have roads on both sides so I built bridges but still nobody came and eventually the homes just burned to the ground.
The settlers come from the right hand side of the map, just south of the farmland.

If they don't get to your housing, it's probably because there is so much swampy land. I'd try a few more bridges.
