Although Caesar IV is around since more than a decade, I have just recently bought it from GOG, along with some other "good old games". While playing it, at a certain point I needed some hint. In addition to hints, I found on this site custom scenarios and a series of very useful tutorials on how to make your own scenario. Inspired by those tutorials and by the custom scenarios that I have downloaded and played, I have finally clicked that "Tools" button so I could see for myself how it feels to work with the Scenario Editor. While at it, I have even got an idea for a background story and decided to try to make a scenario around Trajan's Bridge. Everything worked out quite well, except painting the terrain, and especially the blend texture (instant crashes!).
Since the Editor was not very helpful at texturing (well, at least in my case), starting a new terrain from scratch was out of question, so I had to pick one of the existing terrains that needed the least modification work to fit my scenario idea, and that was Colonia Agrippina.
Regarding the scripting work, I guess that almost everything that one would like to write has already been written, either in the game's scenario scripts or in the scripts coming with the custom scenarios (specifically Hieronymus', who has also kindly authored the Scripting Guide), so it was not that hard to pick the right snippets and adapt them to make my story work.
Here is the Overview text:
"The Roman Empire wishes to expand across the Danube into Dacia. You have been ordered to the Dacian South border by the Emperor Trajan. Start building a town under the Iron Gates that shall be named Drobeta, so you can prepare to build a bridge over the Danube and extend the town across that bridge. Expect resistance on the North side that will intensify over time, so you will have to develop enough military power to oppose it! Secure the bridge by maintaining an adequate number of cohorts, so Rome can cross the Danube at will.
You will need to build a quite large city here in order to be able to maintain the cohorts, and its safe walls will surely attract many wealthy people; create for them conditions for maximum prosperity! With the untapped local resources and the trade opportunities, your tasks should be easily doable!"
In order to make sure that the scenario is really "doable" as stated at the end of the quote above, I have test-played it until the Victory screen on both Normal and Hard. The fact that I have actually enjoyed playing it has determined me to publish it, in the hope that some of you might enjoy it too.
Installation instructions:
All files contained in Drobeta.zip need to be copied into the "Caesar IV\Data\Scenarios" folder.

Additional Comments:
I really enjoyed this, I had to re-start a few times as i kept getting fired, which is cool as the scenario is challenging. Only problem I found was, when i did complete the scenario, i got a "You Cheated" line. I didn't think I did cheat other than reload after I did something wrong.
I have been working on creating a few scenarios myself and I like the way you scripted the storyline, especially as I can't get a hang of the scripting guide! The basic scripting from 'the editor guide' is fine as it tells you where to put everything (onBeginScenario, OnLoad etc), but the main scripting guide is giving me a headache. |

Love how challenging it is. I am soo good at this game, even the hardest in game scenarios are too easy. I have no idea how long it took to make this scenario. If its not too much to ask, can you please make another one? |

Additional Comments: A tough one to crack! Nicely done. Had to redesign my planning a couple of times, but finally got it. Thx!

A very nice scenario indeed! I had to restart several times. A tougher nut to crack, as the scenario is a bit different from most. I really enjoyed the advance-while-you-play style of it. There are loads of easy riches to be traded in pottery and glass, but the clay and sand are on the other side of the river. And you can't build a bridge straight away. |
