Caralis Overview
Pause. I see lots of farmland. All types of farms are available, but the only resources are timber and clay. Review the trading possibilities. Check the rating requirements.
The plan:
It looks like prosperity will be the issue on this map, so I am going to need patricians. If I evolve the patrician housing only as far as large estates, I won’t need walls (in fact, I’ll probably only need medium estates for prosperity of 50). The information needed for calculating prosperity can be found here.
My prosperity calculation:
10 large insulae = 10x25 = 250
6 medium domus = 6x25 = 150
5 medium estates = 5x155 = 775
Total =1175
Per house =1175/(10+6+5) = 55.95
I spend some time designing a housing block and investigating the coverage for the different types of entertainment buildings. Then I settle for an expanded version of my Narbo block that will allow for five patrician houses. I lay this out in the central part of the map, using some of the farmland.

I plan to have grain, vegetables and wine on the eastern farmland (near the markets), and sheep and cattle on the western side. I’ll place the ports along the shoreline south of the grain and vegetable farms, and place the pottery, weapons and wine industries here too, so they are near the trading ports.
My first industry will be pottery because we can sell it to Caesalpine Gaul. After the pottery industry is established, I’ll work on selling weapons and wine. I plan to give my citizens clothing and oil too, but I’ll work on the exports first. I will place a sheep farm early in the game because wool grows slowly.
160 BC:
I place eight insulae, two domus, markets, clinic, shrine to Jupiter, tax office, odeum, fountain, pump house, reservoir, prefect and engineer, two grain and two vegetable farms. The markets, tax office and odeum are mothballed until we need them.
After setting the labour priorities, I un-pause the game.
Slowly I build a clay pit, sheep farm, two pottery factories, and a second prefect and engineer near the clay pit. I open trade with Caesalpine Gaul and build a trade port to import iron and sell pottery. I build timber camp, second clay pit, third pottery, two warehouses (one for basic goods near the housing, one for clay and timber near the clay pits). To avoid selling all the pottery, or importing too much iron, I consult the storage/trade advisor and set pottery to export over two and iron to import no more than four.
When food is available, I turn on the food market and basic goods market, add another domus, and turn on the tax office and odeum.
Then I build a weapon factory near the shore, and open trade with Macedonia and start selling weapons.
By November, I have two clothing factories near the timber cutter to the west of the city, a second weapon factory and a vineyard and wine factory near the ports. I realize that my store of denarii is down to 1500, and discover that the trade ports are still mothballed. I turn off clay and timber industries temporarily until I have more plebs and I un-mothball the trade ports.
159 BC:
By February in the second year my insulae are upgrading and more pleb employees are available. Caesar demands his annual tribute of 750 denarii but I don’t send it yet.
Slowly I turn on the luxury market, add another warehouse (to hold luxury goods) and wine factory; I open trade with Latium to sell wine, and add another prefect & engineer near the docks. After selling a few weapons and pottery, I send off the tribute. Then I build another grape farm and wine factory. As the domus upgrade, I add a bathhouse and school.
In May I decide it’s time for oil, so I build another two insulae (I now have 10), an olive farm and two oil factories.
By August of the second year I have 3000 denarii so it’s time to think about patricians.
I start with a cattle farm on the western farmland. Because this farm is so far from the markets, I build a granary next to the grain farms near my market square and set it to 16 meat. I import gold, build a jewellery factory, build a third grain farm and a third vegetable farm, another grape farm and wine factory, and another warehouse to hold pottery and wine.
158 BC:
In January of year three, I open trade with Achaea and start selling grapes. I place an exotic market and two patrician houses. Everything is going well.
In March, Rome demands 10 wine. I stockpile wine. In April, Rome demands tribute. I send the 750 denarii and add a few decorations to my patrician housing. I start importing salt. I consult the trade advisor again and set the import level to two salt and two perfume. This will slow the development of my housing but will be easier on the budget. Now I need more entertainment for the patricians, so I build another domus, a theatre and an actor guild.
In July, I ship the wine and build two more patrician houses. In August, Rome requests 40 pottery, which I ship in October.
By the end of December, I have added another domus, and another tax office and shrine to Jupiter near the patricians.
157 BC:
Year four is quiet. Caesar demands the usual tribute of 750 denarii in April, and requests 25 clothing in August. By the end of the year I have a functioning arena, a forum and a shrine to Mercury, My citizens are now housed in 10 large insulae, 6 medium domus, 4 medium estates and one small estate in the process of evolving into a medium estate. My ratings are 52/50/53/43/2010.
The only goal remaining is to meet the target of 50 favour. You can do this with gifts, but I choose to play longer.
156 BC:
In year five there is the 750 denarii tribute demand in April, a demand for 10 wine in July, and a request for 40 pottery in October. I have too much clothing so I turn off one of the clothing factories and make sure my pottery factories are all turned on.
155 BC:
In February 155 there are bandits outside the city. I pay the 1500 denarii bribe. After this, I ship the pottery, give a small gift to Caesar and advance to the victory screen.
