Viminacium Overview
Pause. There are two large areas of farmland, all crops except grapes, all raw materials except sand and marble. The trade route to Dacia isn’t too expensive, and the city buys 95 pottery a year, so that will be the first industry.
In this mission, favour is the stumbling block. There are many demands from Rome and many requests. Meet the demands, and all requests for goods that you can produce, but ignore all the requests for exotic goods. You will more than likely go bankrupt trying to fill those requests.
The plan:
I’ll use my standard block again but replace one of the patrician houses with four insulae, so I can meet the 3,000 population requirement. I’ll place it in the centre of the map to the west of the trees. It doesn’t matter that it covers some of the farmland, there is plenty. I lay out the housing block and leave enough space for walls - I place a a gatehouse (mothballed) to make sure I have enough space when I need it.

The grain and vegetable farms can go to the south of the city, cattle and sheep to the west. The pottery industry will go next to the clay pits; the jewellery and utensils will go near the iron mines.
10 BC:
I place my starter housing block, the pump house and reservoir, a prefect and engineer, two grain farms, two vegetable farms, a cattle farm and a sheep farm. The markets are mothballed until we need them. After setting the labour priorities, I un-pause the game.
As soon as there are some unemployed plebs I start on the exports. I build two clay digging camps close to the clay pits near the northern farmland. I start a small industrial block close by, where I place three pottery factories, a prefect, an engineer and the trading station for Dacia. I start selling pottery.
By June, I have an olive farm and oil factory, with another prefect and engineer nearby, a granary near the grain farms, another domus, a working food market, tax office and odeum, and another clay digging camp and another pottery factory.
When the first oil is ready, I mothball one of the pottery factories and place a basic goods market. I set it to sell only oil.
By the end of the year, I have a clothing factory with a warehouse set to hold clothing, oil and excess wool and olives, and another prefect and engineer near the grain farms. I turn on the mothballed pottery factory. The city has just over 1000 citizens and I have sold 43 pieces of pottery.
09 BC:
The insulae are upgrading. I start the gold, iron and timber industries. I use the resources to the south west of the city. In February there is a demand for tribute. I don’t send it immediately.
By June the basic goods market is selling clothing (but not pottery) and the insulae are upgrading again. I now have one iron mining camp, one gold mining camp, a timber cutter, a warehouse for gold and iron, and another prefect and engineer near the gold mine. I place a second oil factory and start on jewellery and utensils.
In August I send the tribute. In September Rome demands 50 gold. I add two more gold mines and another warehouse to hold gold.
By the end of the year, I have a second clothing factory, a luxury goods market, and two patrician houses. The domus have upgraded and I have built an actor guild, a theatre and a second tax office. I have started an industrial area southeast of the city where I have one jewellery factory, two utensil factories, a furniture factory and extra warehouses.
I have sold 94 pieces of pottery and I have accumulated 19 gold. I try walling the city to see what it will cost. Over 3,500 denarii, so I reload my saved game and postpone walls. I decide to increase the city to 20 houses and go for the dedication of Mercury to help the gold accumulate faster. I build another domus, two more insulae, a third villa and a shrine to Mercury (with perfect coverage).
08 BC:
At the start of the year my ratings are 15/50/27/35/1800. I have 5430 denarii. I build a school and a forum. I have more immigrants so I build another utensil factory, a second iron mining camp, another cattle farm and granary.
In February, Rome requests 30 jewellery. I stockpile jewellery. Standard pleb wages fall to 17. Thanks to the dedication of mercury I now have 47 gold.
In March I place another timber cutter, I ship the gold so I can use the warehouse for jewellery.
By July I have added another two jewellers, another prefect and engineer in the industrial zone (after a small fire), 2 more insulae and I have mothballed a clay gathering camp. I place a third timber cutter – I am having problems with the timber cutters, they do not seem to be able to find the trees.
I open trade with Asia to sell utensils (I am still stockpiling jewellery). I place an extra grain farm and vegetable farm. I have too many unemployed equites, so I build a gladiator guild.
In August, there is a demand for tribute and a request for 50 amber. I’ll send the tribute later; I ignore the request for amber. I build a weapon factory.
In September, Rome demands 50 timber. I build a fourth timber cutter and a warehouse to hold timber.
In November, I spend 4,000 denarii walling in the city. I have to remove several trees from the walls before the equites are willing to upgrade.
By the end of the year, I have a working arena, an exotic market (only selling spices so far), and I build a fourth villa.
07 BC:
In January, I send off the tribute and the jewellery. I build a hospital.
In February, Rome requests 30 utensils and raises standard wages for plebs. I stockpile utensils.
I start importing silk and exporting jewellery. I add another warehouse and another domus. I raise the plebs’ wages to 20 (standard).
In May I am threatened by raiders. It will cost 3,000 denarii to buy them off. I only have 2332 denarii because I have been decorating the patrician housing area. I turn off all imports.
When the raiders arrive in June I have just over 3,000 denarii, so I buy them off. I wait until July to turn imports on again.
In August, I send off the utensils and resume utensil exports. There is a request for 50 spices (ignore it). I build another domus and shrines to Ceres and Bacchus. Food is low – I build another grain farm and another vegetable farm. I send the tribute. (My favour is 45.)
In September Rome demands 50 iron. I add another insula and another iron mine.
By December, my block has a barber. I have a shrine to Mars; I have started producing furniture and have opened trade with Cyrenaica to sell furniture and buy sylphium.
06 BC:
At the start of January, my ratings are 72/84/47/45/2920. I have 2411 denarii. Rome demands 500 denarii tribute again.
In February there is a request for 30 furniture. I ship the iron, switch the warehouse from iron to furniture, and mothball one iron mining camp and one gold mining camp.
By June I have added to my housing block. I now have a second food market, a seventh domus and an animal trainer. I am importing amber and furs from Dacia for the patricians so I connect the pottery industry to the housing block. I make sure the basic market does not sell pottery.
By October, I have sent off the tribute and the furniture, built an eighth domus, a library and a coliseum.
In November I buy off the raiders again. They cost 3,800 denarii this time.
05 BC:
In January, my ratings are 98/76/71/50/3160 and I have 3028 denarii. I build another barber and a basilica. I am short a few equites, so I set the labour priority for justice to ‘low’ (the justice buildings have the most extensive service coverage). I open trade with Latium and import salt.
In March, Rome demands 30 gold. I turn on the mothballed the gold mining camp and switch a warehouse from furniture to gold. I have forgotten to build a governor's residence. I have to move the forum in order to fit it in.
In July, Rome demands tribute again. I have a sneaking suspicion that I may have paid this twice, but I can’t be sure.
In August I send the gold. In October Rome demands 50 amber (another request to ignore). In November the raiders are back; 3,000 denarii this time. In December Rome requests 30 jewellery.
04 BC:
In January I send off the jewellery and turn off a gold mine. I have far too much gold.
I pass the time adding trees and shrubs to the patrician neighbourhood.
In July Rome requests 50 spices. I add a few more trees. In August, Rome demands tribute. I send it immediately. I add a few gardens.
In September, Rome requests 30 utensils. I have to add another warehouse to hold them – the one I had been using is still full of gold. I stockpile utensils.
Rome demands 50 timber. I have no trouble meeting this demand.
03 BC:
I ship the utensils and win the scenario.
