Introduction

You’ve developed an unfortunate reputation as a spendthrift and poor manager of money. In spite of this, those few still willing to be associated with you in the Senate have managed to get you a new assignment as governor of Cyrenaica. The province came into Roman control some years ago, but it has of late fallen on hard times, much as you have done.

Your mission is to build a new colony at Cyrene. The location is perhaps less than ideal for a city, but there should be enough fertile land and fresh water to feed a growing populace. The trouble is that most of the fertile land is located in a swampy region, so building in the area may be tricky. Also, apart from the ease of growing food, the land has little to offer in the way of resources.

If you can manage to get your settlement off the ground, though, you will find that your location provides a good spot to act as a middleman for trade between Rome and cities further east. Planned properly, you may even be able to turn a profit from local industry using imported raw materials.

As the province has been somewhat ill-governed of late, the locals are not enthusiastic about Roman rule and you may expect some raiding now and again. If you can prove your might, though, perhaps you can bring a semblance of order to the province.

It would be improper to say that expectations were high from this venture, but as it is truly your last chance you must make of it what you can and prove your detractors wrong.
